MVC Update
Feb 9, 2006
Congratulations to the following winners at last weekends MVC NORDICA Series events:
At Suicide 6 it was home teamers Samantha Harrington and Spencer Lewis topping the large field and over the hill at the Quechee Jones Super Bowl extravaganza it was Suicide 6’s Kelsey Pearson leading the girls and Okemo’s Tanner Mottau taking the gold for the boys. For the J5’s it was Okemo’s Hana Saydek (4th overall) and Keiran Mottau leading the field. Moving west to Pico Peter Bischoff led a band of coaches salting to make B’Slope very raceable and after 2 competitive runs it was OMS’s Hayley Best and LJ LuBow bringing home the gold medals for the day. The team from Suicide 6 wore the Dobermann T’shirts and both teams from Okemo took home the Beanpot and the J3 Banner at their respective events.
The MVC standings are all updated and posted on vara.org for the J3’s and the Jones Series.
This week the MVC is well represented at the USSA Elite Speed Camp at Okemo. Yesterday there was a trailfull of terrain drills including 3 sets of rollers, tuck drill station and a corridor of tuck jumps. Annie Lieter and Danny Moore from Suicide 6, Angie Lucian, Jim Ryan, Colin Palma and Kris Hopkins from Killington and Hayley Best, Tobias Britton, Caitlin Mitchell, Ashby Sussman, Emma Leblanc, LJ LuBow, Will Humphrey, and Myles Trainer were chosen for the USSA Development Project.
This Saturday the NORDICA Ross Series splits sites with panel slalom action at both Quechee and Okemo.
On Sunday NORDICA Jones athletes head to the Middlebury Snow Bowl for exciting GS action. The flip 15 order for both runs will be in effect having series’ leaders Pearson and Mottau running 15th for both girls and boys, respectively.
Also on Sunday a group from the MVC will be attending the VARA Tactical Camp at Stowe which runs into Monday as well.
A couple of reminders looking out to the following weekend, President’s Weekend – The NORDICA Jones racers will be at Okemo for a slalom event on the 19th while the J3’s will finish the MVC season at Killington, also on the 19th, giving our weekend skiers a day to train before the finale. 30 boys and 29 girls will be named to the MVC Team, including 3 boys and 2 girls that will be automatics to the J3 Olympics in New York in March. The Killington Ski Club will be offering their annual light refreshments while the MVC Team is being tabulated, which is much appreciated.
Those MVC J3’s that aren’t named to the MVC team are eligible for the VARA Shootout on Tuesday, Feb. 21st at Suicide 6 and a chance to lock up 15 additional spots to the VARA J3 Championships at Sugarbush the following weekend.
Fire up those Tivos and DVRS for all the Olympic action starting Friday and cheer on the many Vermonters participating in the events.
On a side note Tuesday evening there was a good program on VPR highlighting Vermont’s Alpine and Nordic ski programs and our deep involvement into the USST and Olympic programs. VARA’s members and friends have provided our young athletes with well over $20,000 in scholarships and safety related equipment to further develop future Olympians and it is obviously much appreciated.
