It’s interesting looking at the results from J3 States, especially the boys – in the GS 11 of the top 15 were from MVC, or former MVC athletes. More specifically, 9 of the 11 were present MVC: Humphrey, Lubow, Mele, Ryan, Naro, Hopkins, Greenwood, Moore and Palma – quite impressive. Only Wunsch and Cochran-Siegle are so called home-grown NVC athletes with the only other NVC athlete, Diamond coming from Tristate.
In the SG 10 of the top 15 were in the same boat, MVC or former MVC athletes with 7 of the 10 present MVC skiers: Hopkins (winner), Lubow, Trainer, Humphrey, Ryan, Moore and Greenwood.
Only 1 SVJC male athlete broke into the top 15 in either of the 2 events, a boy from SMS.
IN the slalom it was less noticeable with only 5 of the top 15 being present or former MVC athletes and only 3 present MVC racers – Moore, Lubow, and Hedlund on the front page.
For the girls it wasn’t the same story – in the slalom it was 5 present or former MVC girls on the front page and 4 of the 5 presently MVC skiers: Best, Mitchell, Lieter and Lucian.
IN the GS the NVC took the lead with only 3 of the 15 present or former MVC racers: Livingston, Britton, and Sussman. The South had 2 of the 15.
The SG showed 4 of the top 15 as present or former MVC girls with 3 present: Lucian, Britton and Acker.
It is also worth noting that each one of these present MVC youngsters has come up through our programs, which obviously can’t be said by either GMVS or Burke
While there will be the usual NVC rhetoric in the spring about how dominant they are they must be reminded of these facts. It is quite arguable that the so called advantages of “going north” as a J3 isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be by the full time academies. Our MVC parents need to be aware of these numbers so we can try and retain our “home-grown” MVC skiers.
It will be the MVC Jones athletes’ turn to keep up the tradition of the Mid’s dominance this month, especially with the VARA Championships in our back yard, Pico.
